Sotech Asia was appointed as the structural contractor for the hotel building now operating as TRIBE Phuket Patong.
The seven-storey building rises approximately 23 metres and provides a total construction area of approximately 12,000 square metres, including two underground parking levels. The structure incorporates driven-pile foundations and post-tensioned concrete slabs.
Completed in 2020, Sotech Asia’s structural works involved challenging below-ground construction on a former swamp site, continuous groundwater pumping and restricted access in central Patong.
Completed Structural Scope
Sotech Asia completed structural works from piling and foundations through to the roof, including:
- Driven-pile installation
- Reinforced-concrete foundations
- Basement walls and waterproofing works
- Two levels of underground parking
- Post-tensioned concrete slabs
- Lift shafts
- Roof structure
- A 100,000-litre concrete water tank extending approximately nine metres deep
The completed structure provided the framework for the hotel’s subsequent architectural, building-services and finishing works.
Challenging Excavation and Groundwater Control
One of the project’s main construction challenges was the excavation for the two basement levels on land that had previously been a swamp.
Groundwater had to be pumped out continuously during the excavation and below-ground works. Four high-flow pumps operated around the clock to manage water entering the excavation and allow construction to proceed.
The combination of groundwater, deep excavation and basement construction made the below-ground works a particularly demanding part of the project. Waterproofing formed part of Sotech Asia’s scope alongside the basement walls and foundations.
Two-Level Basement and Deep Concrete Water Tank
The building incorporates two underground parking levels, providing parking beneath the hotel within the available site footprint.
Sotech Asia’s scope also included a 100,000-litre concrete water tank extending approximately nine metres deep. Construction of this element added to the complexity of the below-ground works, particularly given the site’s groundwater conditions.
Together, the basement levels, foundations and deep water tank formed a substantial part of the project’s structural construction.
Post-Tensioned Concrete Construction
The building’s floor structure incorporates post-tensioned concrete slabs.
Construction of these floors involved coordinating reinforcement, tendon installation and concrete placement with the post-tensioning operations. The floor structure formed part of Sotech Asia’s scope through the seven-storey building, alongside the lift shafts and roof structure.
The project adds to Sotech Asia’s experience in delivering post-tensioned structures for multi-storey developments in Phuket.
Construction Logistics in Central Patong
The project’s location in central Patong presented additional access and delivery challenges.
Heavy traffic and restricted site access complicated the movement of construction materials, equipment and vehicles. Working within these conditions required coordination of deliveries and site activities throughout the structural construction.
Managing these constraints alongside the excavation, continuous groundwater pumping and above-ground works was a central part of delivering the project.
